Why did two NASA space telescopes disconnected in a
week?
1. Two NASA space telescopes go offline :
In completely unrelated
events, two NASA space telescopes, the Hubble Space Observatory and the Chandra
X-ray Observatory, were disconnected in a week.
The Hubble went into safe mode when the third of its six gyroscopes
experienced a mechanical failure and a backup was not activated. Kepler,
another space telescope, has been in safe mode since September. The Washington
Posthas the details. Chandra also experienced a gyroscope failure and closed
his eyes with X-rays. Read the full story on Extreme Tech.
2. A big scare for the astronauts of the ISS :
A Russian Soyuz rocket
failed when it launched US astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey
Ovchinin toward the International Space Station on Thursday. Instead of leaving
the atmosphere safely, for the first time in 20 years, a manned rocket failed
and catapulted its passengers to earth. The duo experienced a whopping 9G in
their violent reentry through layers of atmosphere, and landed safely in
Kazakhstan, although the rocket disintegrated. Currently, there are three
astronauts on board the ISS, but Russia has now grounded the Soyuz, which means
that the crew launches will not happen soon. Find more in Gizmodo.
